The whole book is about the relationship between Jake and Brett. The reason they aren't together is she is unwilling to give up her sexlife. The fact that sex plays suvh a major part in this book is part of why the book was banned. This added on the the profanity bring alot of controversy.
I personally think that profanity was most of why this novel was banned. The whole general plot of sec being the only reason she doesnt have a relationship with Jake just makes it that much worse. It's mainly about that fact that she does'nt want to give it up.
